I.  Volunteer Needs at Coolidge Library

(Special Note:  DCPS has a new Catalog System called the Destiny Online Catalog System.  Many schools, elementary and secondary have not had librarians in place long enough to convert their book collections over to this new system.  I’ve been a librarian at Calvin Coolidge for the past two years and I’ve cataloged the entire Reference Book Collection, the majority of the Fiction Book Collection, half of the Classic Book Collection and one third of the Circulating Book Collection with the help of student library aides.  This year I have not been assigned any student aides, so I definitely need help in this area.  Below are Book and Audio/Visual Collections that I need voluntary help in cataloging so that Calvin Coolidge High School’s entire collection can be made available for student and faculty use online).

A.     Volunteers are needed to assist in completing the cataloging of the library’s:

1.      Circulating Book Collection

2.      Fiction Book Collection

3.      Biography Collection

4.      Classic Book Collection

5.      Video/DVD Collection

6.      Audio Book Collection

B.     Volunteers are needed to assist in decorating the back reading room of the library which houses the Circulating Book Collection.  What’s needed is listed below:

1.      Library Posters

2.      Directional Signs

3.      Plants

C.     Volunteers are need to assist with the Coolidge Library Book Club

1.      We are partnering with librarians at Takoma Library

2.      The Library’s Book Club meets every Thursday of each month from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.  Sometimes students request that the book club meet during their lunch hour.

3.      Special Education students need assistance during the day with their reading, spelling, and vocabulary skill development

4.      Regular education students need help with SAT PREP

II. Print Materials Needs of the Library

(The Coolidge Library presently has only three active magazine subscriptions: Smithsonian Magazine, Black Enterprise Magazine and National Geographic Magazine.  If a community member is interested in donating to the Calvin Coolidge Library and its students by sponsoring the funding for a one year subscription to particular newspaper or magazine of his or her choice, the Coolidge Family of students and teachers would be forever grateful for such a donation.  Types of subscriptions below are needful and appropriate for high school students.

1.      Washington Post

2.      Washington Times
